FC Rostov emerged with a shock 3-2 victory over five-time champions Bayern Munich, thanks to Christian Noboa's decisive free-kick in Russia on Wednesday.
Douglas Costa gave Bayern the lead but Sardar Azmoun cancelled it before half-time. After the restart, Rostov took a 2-1 lead from Dmitry Poloz's penalty, only to get levelled in as many minutes through Juan Bernat’s cool finish.
With the scoreline 2-2, Noboa claimed all three points for the Russian side when he found the bottom corner with a delightful free-kick from 20 yards in sub-zero conditions.
While Bayern had already made it to the round of 16, the defeat allowed Rostov to get closer to a Europa League berth and Atletico Madrid to win group D.
Kevin Gameiro and Antoine Griezmann scored the goals as Atletico later sealed the top spot with a 2-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven. Gameiro broke the deadlock in the 55th minute with a low drive and Griezmann netted the second with 11 minutes to spare.
Meanwhile in Group A, Arsenal missed the chance to finish on top as they were held to a 2-2 draw by French giants Paris Saint-Germain at the Emirates stadium
The visitors took the lead through Edinson Cavani before Oliver Giroud restored parity from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time. An unlucky Marco Verrati own goal gave the Gunners a 2-1 lead, but a late Lucas Moura header steered past David Ospina by Alex Iwobi as he attempted to head clear, gave PSG a 2-2 draw.
Arsenal will now be dependent on Bulgarian club Ludogorets Razgrad, who drew 0-0 with FC Basel, to get a result against PSG in Paris on December 6 when they meet Basel in Switzerland.
In Group B, Napoli are on top on eight points after a 0-0 with Dynamo Kyiv while Benfica are a point behind after squandering a three-goal advantage to be held to a 3-3 draw by Besiktas in Istanbul.
While in Group C, Celtic, however, were knocked out of Europe altogether as Lionel Messi gave Barcelona a 2-0 win at Parkhead.
Messi, who scored a hat-trick in the 7-0 home win over Celtic in the opening fixture, struck from close range in the first half and doubled his tally from the spot soon after half-time.
Manchester City also secured their place in the last 16 as they came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw at Borussia Monchengladbach.
