India took a 1-0 series lead in the five-match Test series with a 246-run win over England in the second Test at Uppal, Vishakapatnam on Monday. The hosts needed just three wickets to wrap up the game in the post-lunch session and they had no trouble in doing it. England could add just 16 runs post-lunch session, before getting bowled out for 158.
Chasing a mammoth 405, the visitors were off to a good start with openers Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed putting up 75 for the first wicket. However, they lost their openers in quick succession at the end of Day Four, which gave India the upperhand going into the final and decisive day of the match.
England knew a win on the final day was next to impossible, and in a pursuit for to block themselves to safety, lost five wickets in the morning session.
Ben Duckett was the first man to walk back to the pavilion for a 16-ball duck. The left-handed batsman never looked comfortable in the middle and looked to sweep off Ravichandran Ashwin, but the ball took the glove and was caught safely by Wriddhiman Saha behind the wicket.
Man in form Moeen Ali was the next to go for two runs with Ravindra Jadeja getting the wicket. Inside edge on the pads and it was an easy catch at slips for skipper Virat Kohli, who earlier dropped a tough chance of Joe Root. Root was however given out caught behind off Ashwin, but he immediately reviewed and the decision was overturned.
India took the new ball after 80 overs. Ashwin and Jadeja bowled a couple of overs to maintain the pressure, but then Mohammed Shami and Jayant Yadav were introduced into the attack for the very first time in the day. And the move paid out handsomely as Jayant removed Ben Stokes with an absolute ripper. Shami too was excellent and was rewarded for tight line and length with the wicket of Root for 25.
Jonny Bairstow showed some resistance by hitting a few boundaries. His partner Zafar Ansari post-lunch, however, became a prey to Ashwin. Ashwin’s delivery spun from outside leg, kept low and crashed into Ansari’s off stump. Stuart Broad, who has ruled out himself of the third Test, came in but failed to show any fight as he was trapped leg before by Jayant.
The hosts were just a wicket away from scripting a famous win as James Anderson joined Bairstow at the middle. Anderson was dismissed the very next bowl lbw to Jayant. The umpire initially ruled it out but after India took the review, the ball tracking showed that the ball would have hit the leg stump.
